The new degree program in Artificial Intelligence will be launched at Lviv Polytechnic National University in September. The program was initiated by Lviv IT Cluster and will receive its first students within the specialization of Computer Science starting this autumn.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of Computer Science which emphasizes on computers simulating human’s intellect, including thinking, identifying and self-educating. The most popular AI examples we already know and use are the self-driving cars (Tesla), the system of language translation in real time (Google Translate), the system of identifying faces and languages (Skype Translate) etc. “There are perfect conditions now to start such a program in Ukraine, because of the lack of Artificial Intelligence professionals. AI will be the trendiest field in the next few years. After graduating from this program in four years, the students will start working in the field immediately, making Ukraine closer to the world’s leaders in this technology” – comments Zenoviy Veres, co-founder of AI Program, Solution Architect at Softserve, the lecturer at Lviv Polytechnic National University and Education Director at Lviv IT Cluster.
Artificial Intelligence is a very promising field which is not discovered enough yet. The biggest industrial and computer companies are working with AI, involving the leading researchers and scientists from all over the world. Stepan Veselovskyi, Lviv IT Cluster CEO says: “Artificial Intelligence – is something very new and interesting right now. Elon Musk has started the new company Neuralink aimed to combine the human intellect with а computer. It’s a very discussed topic. Lviv has a chance to contribute to the world’s tech trends”.
The curriculum for the Bachelor’s Program in AI was developed by a working group of 40 people, including experts from Lviv IT companies and teachers from Lviv Polytechnic National University. Such symbiosis of practitioners and theorists will give students the best results, members of the working group say. “Studying here will be more academic, involving lots of Maths, but of course it will be combined with practical classes. – Explains Nataliya Shakhovska, co-founder of AI Program, the professor at the Department of Information Systems and Networks at Lviv Polytechnic University. These studies demand profound analytical skills. There are courses in AI already in all top technical universities in the world. AI is used very intensively in the industry, that is why there is a high demand for AI experts in Lviv too”.
Blended learning will be used in the AI program. It means that the traditional academic methods will be combined with interactive practice and e-learning. In particular, the students will watch lectures from of the leading scientists and professors from foreign universities. Lectures will be held both in English and Ukrainian. Dmytro Fedasyuk, Vice-Rector on Scientific and Pedagogical Work at Lviv Polytechnic National University adds: “We used to have a similar program before – within Intellectual Decision Making Systems specialization. It became the foundation for the new program in AI. Currently, the AI Program is waiting to be officially approved by Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies. Students will be able to apply for this program already in the summer”.
Around 100 students can apply for the AI program. By the way, the first pilot program Internet of Things which was created by IT specialists together with the university lecturers started last year. Currently, there are more than 50 students studying at the program.
