SoftServe and LNU Launch the First Bachelor’s Degree Program in Quantum Programming in Ukraine

12 Aug, 2021

SoftServe and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv are going to start a unique bachelor’s program “Quantum Computers and Quantum Programming” this September in order to develop one of the most breakthrough technologies of the future.

Quantum computing is one of the eight most disruptive emerging technologies of the future, according to BCG research. Experts predict that the era of quantum computers will peak in 10 years, but today this technology is actively studied and researched by tech giants IBM, Microsoft, Google, Intel, Alibaba, and others. Quantum technologies are also being studied at SoftServe the R&D department of the company responsible for developing deep-tech innovations for businesses is already researching the possibility of building practical solutions based on quantum computing for the company’s customers.

The new bachelor’s program will allow the company to expand its research towards quantum computing and programming, attracting students of the program in joint research. Instead, students will have the opportunity to integrate into the industry and gain experience in one of the most promising technologies in the world from the first year, studying and working together with SoftServe experts.

Very soon, quantum computers will radically change the world around us, affecting entire industries financial services, the design of new materials, pharma industry, and logistics. It is important to understand today how we will use this technology in 5 to 10 years. I am very pleased that this program will start at Lviv University as similar programs begin to appear worldwide and here we are among the pioneers. This program is an opportunity to grow specialists who are able to work and compete at the global level. Students of this program will receive a wide range of knowledge they will understand physics and will be able to solve complex problems, and on the other hand, they will study software engineering and would have a solid knowledge of cloud technologies,” comments Mykola Maksymenko, R&D Director, SoftServe.

The Department of Theoretical Physics has been conducting scientific research in the field of quantum information for more than 20 years. Over the past 10 years, students of the Master’s degree program learned about quantum information and quantum computing within the course on “Fundamental Problems of Quantum Mechanics”. We expanded this direction into a full bachelor’s and master’s degree educational programs “Quantum Computers and Quantum Programming” opening in 2020. We are pleased that this educational program was created in cooperation with SoftServe,” comments Prof. Volodymyr Tkachuk, curator of the degree program “Quantum Computers and Quantum Programming”, Head of the Professor Ivan Vakarchuk Department of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Physics, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

The program “Quantum computers and quantum programming” involves the study of physics, mathematical, and computer science subjects. As part of the program, students will get solid theoretical knowledge in the field of physics and astronomy, as well as practical programming skills on IBM, Google, Rigetti quantum computers, etc.

SoftServe together with Ivan Franko National University of Lviv are also working on the master’s program of the same name, which will be launched in September 2021 as well.
