Lviv IT Cluster Hosted Spanish Delegation to Discuss Cooperation Between Ukrainian and Spanish Tech Companies

On October 20, Lviv IT Cluster met with representatives of the Spanish Bureau for Ukraine Rebuilding and the Economic and Trade Office of the Embassy of Spain in Ukraine. The discussion focused on opportunities to strengthen business ties between Ukrainian and Spanish companies, expand into new markets, and launch joint initiatives.

The meeting was attended by Clara Guzmán, Director General of the Spanish Bureau for Ukraine Rebuilding; Alejandro Sánchez Cosials, Advisor to the organization; Ignacio Jiménez, Chief Economic and Trade Advisor at the Economic and Trade Office of the Embassy of Spain in Ukraine; and Juan Carlos Morales, Trade Attaché at the office.

The Lviv IT Cluster team presented the association’s key areas of activity, including support for tech businesses, educational initiatives, IT market research, and tools for international cooperation.

Particular attention was given to the experience of Ukrainian tech companies working with the Spanish market. Ahead of the meeting, Lviv IT Cluster collected responses from 21 companies to identify their needs, expectations, and key barriers to cooperation with Spanish partners.

Key challenges Ukrainian tech businesses face when working with the Spanish market include:

• Finding reliable partners;
• Differences in business practices;
• Language barriers;
• Information security certification requirements;
• Specific requirements for participating in international projects and consortia.

Bilateral trade in services and products remains an important area of cooperation between the Ukrainian and Spanish markets. At the same time, the parties discussed opportunities for deeper collaboration, including combining the expertise of Ukrainian and Spanish companies to develop joint products and enter third-country markets.

One potential next step is a dedicated networking event for Ukrainian and Spanish companies. The proposed approach is to tailor the event to business needs by identifying companies’ interests in advance, selecting participants based on their areas of expertise, and creating opportunities for meaningful introductions and potential partnerships.

The parties also discussed holding a follow-up online meeting of the working group with partners to explore possible formats for cooperation in greater detail and agree on the next steps.
