Lviv IT Cluster Wins Investment Competition to Establish a Research Center

On October 13, the Investment Commission of the Lviv City Council selected the Lviv IT Cluster as the competition winner to establish a Research Center for students of engineering specialties.

The next steps will involve approving the commission’s decision and signing an investment agreement. Following this, the Lviv IT Cluster and partners from the USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukraine will announce an architectural competition to choose the best concept for the center. Subsequently, the project will be developed and, finally, implemented.

“This is a significant project for the entire Ukraine. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it will become a space where the next big startups and inventions will be born. We would like to thank the Lviv IT Cluster for their participation and willingness to implement such a large-scale project. Also, a special thanks to all members of the investment commission for their active work in recent months,” says Andriy Moskalenko, the first deputy mayor of Lviv.

The Lviv IT Cluster has contributed to transforming higher education for over eight years. The Cluster has modernized and launched 19 bachelor’s degree programs in collaboration with tech companies and four Lviv universities. A separate entrepreneurship course is being introduced to these programs to equip students with the skills that will help them turn ideas into startups. The next stage involves creating inter-university teams and their interaction.

Imagine the surge of dynamism and innovation when students from varied academic backgrounds – ‘Cybersecurity’ at the University of Life Safety, ‘IT Sales Management’ at Lviv Polytechnic, ‘Data Science’ at the University of Lviv, and ‘UI/UX’ at the Academy of Arts – unite to collaborate on a joint project, guided by mentors from top tech companies. Our goal is to create a unique ecosystem in the field of innovation that brings together all stakeholders in the tech industry in one place, including students, graduate students, teachers, tech company professionals, mentors, and angel investors. We are convinced that this synergy will lead to the emergence of new projects and startups. The Research Center of Lviv IT Cluster will be the necessary infrastructure to bring them to life,” adds Stepan Veselovskyi, CEO of Lviv IT Cluster.

The Research Center will include laboratories for cross-sector research and spaces for the development of student startups and entrepreneurial skills:

  • Design Thinking Lab.
  • IoT Lab.
  • AI Lab.
  • Robotics Lab.
  • AR/VR + Gamedev Lab.
  • Mechanical Processing Lab.
  • HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) Lab.
  • Cybersecurity Lab.
  • Radio Electronics Lab.
  • Data Center.

The Research Center will provide an opportunity to develop new products in the challenging field of deep tech, a crucial initiative given the current scarcity of science-based products in Ukraine, which stems from a lack of dedicated spaces for their creation.

The USAID Competitive Economy of Ukraine Program supports the project implementation.

“The creation of a physical space for interaction between researchers, entrepreneurs, and students will be a place that unites those who would never have met in a professional environment to work on a joint project. We believe that in an environment filled with expert opinions, creativity, and enriched entrepreneurial experience, prototypes, and new products will be created, enabling entrepreneurs, scientists, and young professionals to launch startups and develop their businesses in Ukraine, thereby contributing to its recovery and development,” says Natalia Petrova, project manager, Department of Economic Growth, United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Research Center is set to be located at 5 Kalicha Hora Street in Lviv, within a three-story building that was constructed in phases during the mid-19th century. The project requires a comprehensive renovation of the building and full equipping of the laboratories with the necessary technology.

The Ministry of Education and Science also supported the establishment of the Research Center, as mentioned in the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Lviv IT Cluster and the Ministry, signed in June.
