On April 4th, Lviv IT Cluster, Lviv City Council, and the USAID Competitive Economy Program signed a memorandum of understanding to create a Research Center with laboratories for training and practice for engineering students from higher education institutions in the city.
The Research Center will combine laboratories for interdisciplinary research and spaces for developing startups and entrepreneurial skills. In the center, students, researchers, and future entrepreneurs can learn, work on their projects and startups, attend lectures, and develop business skills.
For the Lviv IT Cluster, this project is a logical continuation of the development of innovative education in Lviv. For over seven years, community members have been contributing to the transformation of higher education in Lviv. And for partners, namely the Lviv City Council and the USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukraine, this project is essential as it leads to the development of innovative entrepreneurship, the creation of new products and startups based on research, and ultimately to the transformation of the region’s economy into a more competitive and innovative one.
“Together with community companies, 19 bachelor’s programs at four universities in the city – Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Lviv State University of Life Safety, and Lviv National Academy of Arts – have been updated. Over 4,000 students are enrolled in these programs. The Research Center will provide the needed infrastructure also for the relocated students. It will be a place where they can implement their boldest ideas, launch their own startups, implement innovative projects, and work in modern laboratories,” says Stepan Veselovskyi, CEO of Lviv IT Cluster.
The Research Center will include various types of labs:
СThe USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukraine supports the creation of the Research Center.
“The initiative to create the Research Center is important right now, as quality education is the foundation for rebuilding the country and its further development. The implementation of the project in a three-party partnership between the USAID Competitive Economy Program, Lviv City Council, and Lviv IT Cluster will be a stimulus for the development of innovative entrepreneurship, the creation of new products, and non-standard solutions,” notes Natalia Petrova, USAID project manager
“We believe that the implementation of the project will become a catalyst for the emergence of startups and products based on solid academic knowledge and a pool of talents who will apply them in practice. Such Research Centers will become the basis for prototyping. Additionally, this Center will play an important role in returning and attracting talents to Ukraine. It will become a space for applying knowledge, implementing bold ideas, and creating products that will be competitive on the global market,” adds Olesya Zaluska, Head of the USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukraine.
The Research Center of Lviv IT Cluster will contribute to developing new jobs, implementing new innovations, and evolving design thinking, an essential prerequisite for competitiveness and innovation. Additionally, the Research Center will create conditions for launching startups and developing other technological sectors.
“With this memorandum, we are beginning to create a quality environment for thousands of students in Lviv. Laboratories, lectures, and recreational rooms are intended to facilitate the emergence of their own projects and startups. Lviv has always been a city of students, and through this partnership, our city becomes a leader in opportunities for students, where everyone will have access to an innovative space to realize their ideas,” emphasized Andriy Moskalenko, the first deputy mayor of Lviv.
“I am convinced that today’s memorandum will give impetus to innovation and creating new jobs. It is excellent that such important projects are being created in Lviv. Thank you to our partners who support the city’s development,” added Andriy Sadovyi, the mayor of Lviv.
The Lviv IT Cluster Research Center will be located at Kalicha Hora Street, 5. The next stage of the Research Center’s development will be creating a comprehensive architectural solution that meets the project requirements.
