Participation in the Lviv IT Cluster’s Mentor Support Program: Brainstack_ Experience

Why is supporting mentorship at the company level important, and how does it benefit students and mentors themselves? This article is part of a series focusing on the Mentor Support Program at Lviv IT Cluster member companies. We had the chance to speak with Valeriya Korolenko, Employer Brand Lead at Brainstack_, who provided insights into the program’s implementation within her company.

Mentorship is a unique opportunity to influence the future generation of tech specialists and share expertise with students. Within the Mentor Support Program of the Lviv IT Cluster, experts from tech companies not only contribute to education and support student initiatives but also acquire skills for their own career growth. The program focuses on two primary areas: providing backing for mentors within the Lviv IT Cluster and for those from affiliated tech companies who participate in the program.

The mentor role is particularly well-suited for individuals who aim to progress into leadership roles and assume managerial responsibilities. It is equally crucial for professionals who want to cultivate leadership skills, master the art of delegation, and share their experiences.

Brainstack_ joined the Mentor Support Program at Lviv IT Cluster in 2023, recognizing the importance of mentorship for the development of education and enhancement of company employees’ knowledge and skills. The company actively supports professionals interested in becoming mentors, recognizing the substantial commitment these mentors undertake in addition to their regular responsibilities. Participation in the program involves the support and encouragement of all professionals who are already mentors or plan to become mentors in the future. Since employees often dedicate their personal time to mentorship, company support is crucial. While each individual has their own personal motivation, support from the company is equally important.

“For Brainstack_, external mentorship is a strategic goal. It provides professionals with the opportunity for vertical growth, progressing into team leads or managers. During mentorship, individuals learn delegation, knowledge-sharing, and discover their strengths and areas for improvement,” says Valeriya.

Each member company independently decides how to motivate mentors. Brainstack_’s incentives include:

  • Monetary bonus upon program completion a mentorship program
  • Branded gift from the company
  • The organization offers opportunities for vertical advancement, potentially to roles such as team lead or internal specialist mentor. The company also facilitates mentor presence during the presentations of their team’s projects, covering travel, accommodation, transportation expenses, and daily allowances.

The opportunity to learn and improve her soft skills through mentoring students motivated Valeriya to become a pioneer among mentors at the Brainstack_ company. She was the first among a team of more than 350 Brainstack_ specialists to start working with students in the HR Management program at Ivan Franko National University. Valeriya’s team conducted HR research on the topic “How employee benefits have changed in 2022-2023 in Ukraine” and secured second place in project presentations.

“For me, it’s primarily an opportunity to structure the knowledge I already have. It was during mentoring that I realized what areas I should improve. It’s not just about knowledge but also about team management skills,” says Valeriya.

Valeriya’s positive experience prompted five more Brainstack_ experts to register for the program. Two of them have already begun working with students on Cybersecurity programs at Lviv Polytechnic National University and Ivan Franko National University. Others will have the opportunity to join the teamwork starting from the second academic semester, as this is the time when the project work starts on the majority of bachelor’s programs.

To further promote external mentorship and engage specialists, Brainstack_ collaborates with student organizations and conducts various career orientation events related to the tech industry. The goal is to encourage young talents to pursue careers in Ukraine.

“We want graduates to know that we welcome them in our company before completing their education. Additionally, we are concerned that due to the war, many students are leaving the country and are likely to work abroad. Therefore, we decided to get involved in educational projects to show that the future is in Ukraine, and we look forward to having young professionals in our team,” says Valeriya Korolenko.

Mentoring students is a crucial component of developing tech education. Therefore, as part of the IT Expert project of Lviv IT Cluster, the Mentor Support Program operates aiming to encourage mentorship and develop the skills of professionals.

Lviv IT Cluster encourages participants of the Mentors Community and offers different benefits for them: soft skills and team leadership training, supporting mentors in all educational process-related questions, providing networking opportunities with colleagues, various bonuses and gifts. By joining the program, companies gain the opportunity to develop and motivate their employees, contribute to the education of a new generation of talented tech professionals, support the startup ecosystem in Ukraine, and enhance their employer brand development.
