Session of Lviv City Council Supports Investment Project for the Creation of a Research Center

During the session of Lviv City Council on July 6, the members supported a resolution approving an investment project to create a Research Center. The competition committee will announce the start.

The resolution envisages the implementation of the investment project “Creation of a Research Center for Students of Engineering Specialties.” The project was supported by 41 members of the Lviv City Council. The approval of the project resolution allows for organizing and conducting an investment competition to determine the investor for project implementation.

“The Lviv IT Cluster community welcomes the approval of the investment project, the implementation of which will significantly impact the quality and effectiveness of higher education. It will be an innovative space that will bring together labs for interdisciplinary research and foster the development of startups and entrepreneurial skills. Students, researchers, and future entrepreneurs in the Center will be able to learn additionally, work on their projects and startups, attend lectures, and develop business skills. To implement the project, we have initiated the signing of a memorandum with USAID and Lviv City Council to create a modern innovative research center. We are looking forward to the next stages of working on the project,” said Stepan Veselovskyi, CEO of Lviv IT Cluster.

“This is a pilot project of such a large-scale format in the premises in the central part of the city, where there will be synergy of all universities and such a hub for training specialists in engineering specialties. We want this project to be implemented as soon as possible because it has a very high added value since it signals all the associations in the field of higher education, as well as various initiatives and company involvement. It is a hub center that will enable the cultivation of professionals,” said Andriy Moskalenko, the first deputy mayor of Lviv.

The Research Center will include the creation of labs in various fields:

  • Design Thinking Lab
  • IoT Lab
  • AI Lab
  • Robotics Lab
  • AR/VR + GameDev Lab
  • Mechanical Processing Lab
  • HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) Lab
  • Cybersecurity Lab
  • Radioelectronics Lab
  • Data Center

The Research Center will be located at 5 Kalicha Hora Street in Lviv. It is a three-story building constructed in several stages in the mid 19th century. The owner of the house was the builder Sylvester Berskyi. Initially, the house was leased by the Regional School Council for the Male Teacher Seminar, and later it became the property of the Ossolineum Institute. During the Soviet era, the building was used as a military registration office for the Galician district of Lviv. Since the 2010s, the building has been unused. Today, the premises of the former army registration office are under the responsibility of the Halytskyi and Frankivskyi districts’ education departments. To implement the project, it is necessary to renovate the building and equip the laboratories with equipment fully.
